Baraguey d'Hilliers was arrested during the Revolution, but released a year later. He took part in the expedition to Egypt but grew sick and remained on Malta, only to be sent back to France and captured by a British warship enroute.
During the campaign in Russia, Baraguey d'Hilliers was made Governor of Smolensk. As the army retreated from Russia, he was given a division in Marshal Victor's Corps and commanded it well enough until an entire brigade of his division surrendered to the Russians. For this action, he was immediately suspended from duty with an inquiry set up to investigate his actions, but he died before it convened.
