Carra St. Cyr first served during the American Revolutionary War. He achieved distinction as an aide to General Aubert-Dubayet during the French Revolution and accompanied him to Turkey on a diplomatic mission. A few years later, Carra St. Cyr married Aubert-Dubayet's widow.
