Custine served during the American Revolutionary War, and attended the Estates-General as a representative of the nobility of Metz. Appointed to command the Army of the Vosges and later the Army of the North, his lack of notable success caused him to be attacked by the more extreme members of the Revolution. Accused of the trumped up charges of deliberately helping the enemy and refusing to allow republicans to dine with him, he was arrested and executed by guillotine.
